High School Reunion
Posted by Andrea BenvenutoHere’s a great concept: take the music of our most beloved ‘80s teen movies and put it in the hands of artists who grew up watching “Pretty in Pink,” “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” and “Say Anything.” It’s been done before, but is there really such a thing as too many Modern English covers? American Laundromat and Face Down Records present High School Reunion, a compilation of 20 songs almost as iconic as that image of John Cusack and his oh-so-romantic boombox, performed by Frank Black, Matthew Sweet, The Dresden Dolls, and others. In some cases, you might as well stick with the original recordings. But there are quite a few keepers. The Caulfield Sisters contribute a worthwhile rendition of “Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want,” while Lori McKenna’s “In Your Eyes” will leave you longing for a Lloyd Dobler of your very own. Or a Diane Court — whichever.
