All Yesterdays’ Parties
Posted by Andrea Benvenuto“The point of this article is not to further rehash what New York City acid was like in 1967,” Danny Goldberg writes in a 1971 piece for Circus magazine. Newly available in paperback, All Yesterdays’ Parties: The Velvet Underground in Print 1966-1971 doesn’t attempt to relive the past, but instead chronicles it with a collection of more than 40 writings from the heyday of rock journalism.
Editor Clinton Heylin’s introduction reads a bit like a textbook, but the essays and reviews that follow provide great entertainment and perspective for anyone interested in Lou Reed & Co., Velvet “patron” Andy Warhol, or old-school publications like Creem and Crawdaddy. Though the book doesn’t provide a comprehensive history of the Velvets, it does contain a catalog of 99 songs recorded and/or performed by the band during its five-year existence. Black-and-white poster and flyer reproductions are the final treat in yesterday’s goody bag.
