NWFF: Music Fesitvals on Film
Posted by Ali MarcusThe T.A.M.I. Show, a 1964 concert of teen-pop all-stars, is currently showing at the Northwest Film Forum in a rare screening. The roster includes Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Chuck Berry, The Beach Boys, and the Supremes. If that’s not enough, an epic performance from James Brown and then a fitting conclusion by the fresh-faced Rolling Stones bring it all back around, effectively pulling the concert out of the 1950s and pretty much continuing head on into the 21st century. With enough go-go to make Beyonce proud, the movie is a perfect cross-section of pop music and the teen scene in an era that sometimes only gets remembered for Bob Dylan and the Beatles.
NWFF’s Music Fesitvals on Film series includes two other films as well. Festival! documents early 60’s performances at the Newport Folk Festival, including Son House, Johnny Cash, Odetta, and yes, “Maggie’s Farm.” Coachella is a bit more modern documentary, with footage of the Flaming Lips, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Radiohead and Bjork.
The series began June 2 and runs through June 15. Go! See www.nwfilmforum.org for details.
