Camera Obscura’s Let’s Get Out of this Country

Are you ready to be heartbroken? Cause even the most flinty of souls should get a little teary over the sheer pop beauty of Camera Obscura’s latest. The opener (“Lloyd, I’m Ready …”) is a bouncy, fully orchestrated stunner, while “Country Mile” deserves prominent placement on your 2006 breakup mix. And every other track is just as affecting.

This time around, all singing duties are left to the lovely Tracyanne Campbell. Nothing against former member John Henderson and his Leonard Cohen impersonation, but it’s one major improvement over the band’s previous record, Underachievers Please Try Harder. Guess the Glaswegians took their own advice—not that they were so bad in the first place.
