Old-Timey, New-Timey
Posted by Ali MarcusEver heard of the Whisky Swillers? Probably not. They don’t have a website. No recordings either, as far as I know. Nevertheless, they are a duo worth checking out. With Willie Crowhammer on banjo and The Reverend Summer (”and that’s The Reverend…”) on guitar, these guys are geezer-squawkin’, harmonizin’, and presumably whisky drinkin’ musicians who make the old seem brand spankin’ new. Picking up on that strain of modern country that has been previously mentioned in this here Rivet blog, it’s a bit of O’ Brother, Where Art Thou? and a bit more of The Tallboys, if you know anything about the local country scene.
And if you don’t, this is a great place to start. Latona Pub, Saturday October 7th, 9PM. With any luck we’ll hear “The Blackest Crow,” a romantic dirge:
The blackest crow that ever flew would surely turn to white/ If I ever prove false to you, bright day would turn to night/ Bright day will turn to night my love, the elements will mourn/ If I ever prove false to you the seas will rage and burn
Or, perhaps the one about the ol’ groundhog:
Up come Sal with a snigger and a grin/ Groundhog grease all over her chin…
