You’ve Got Me Under Your Mitten

Some Math and Physics Club songs are kind of like one of those shy guys or girls who’d sit in the back of class doodling in a notebook. They’re quiet, so you might not notice them at first, but then you keep seeing them every day and inevitably realize how totally cute and awesome they are. It turns out to be the kind of crush the band sings about on “La La La Lisa” (“Just something about a girl with a bass guitar”).

This is the Seattle indie poppers’ self-titled debut album, quick on the heels of last year’s buzz-worthy “Weekends Away” and “Movie Ending Romance” EPs. “Darling, Please Come Home” and “Last Dance” are the immediately catchy standouts, while “Cold as Minnesota” may as well be a lost Belle and Sebastian song. (The members of Math and Physics club might be sick of hearing that, but it’s true and not such a bad thing anyway.) Overall, though, singer Charles Bert is sounding less like Morrissey and more like himself; the timbre of his voice is a perfect match for recent crisp autumn weather or the Seattle spring he romanticizes on “April Showers.”

The band will give a free in-store performance at Sonic Boom in Ballard on Saturday, Oct. 14 before their album release show (with Boat and The Seaworthies) at the Sunset Tavern later that night.

[…] The collection comes from Santa Barbara-based Matinee Recordings, who also brought us the new Math and Physics club album. Other recent releases from the label include Harper Lee’s “He Holds a Flame” and Lovejoy’s “England Made Me” EPs. Harper Lee is Brighter singer Keris Howard’s new band; these four songs (plus one extended version of the title track) bring an updated take on his gentle British style. Lovejoy is the work of Richard Preece and slightly more hip, as in the electrobeats of “Are You Analogue or Digital?” and the June Brides cover “In the Rain.” Order them all here, and Matinee’s sweet Jimmy will probably throw in a cool postcard or two.
