Women on the Edge
Posted by Andrea BenvenutoHollywood’s made two movies about it, but even if it’s only supplemental viewing to J. Lo’s “Border Town” or Minnie Driver’s “The Virgin of Juarez,” Steev Hise’s new documentary is worth a look. “On the Edge: The Femicide in Ciudad Juarez” explores the controversy of the Mexican city where more than 400 women have been kidnapped, raped, and brutally murdered in the past decade.
The film examines the circumstances that contribute to a society where such crimes can go overlooked and unsolved by police — drug trafficking, corruption and poverty all figure in to the equation. Besides interviews with the scholars, journalists and activists devoted to the women of Juarez, we see mothers whose daughters never came home from work or school, only to be found dead in a field days later. Too many of them tell the same story.
The DVD is available for online order from Illegal Art.
