Our love for magazines is a big part of the reason we make one. Present your favorite bookworm with a subscription to one of these publications, and he or she will be thanking you for the next 12 months.

Good, by targeting a group of readers linked by a way of thinking rather than a specific interest, is a lot like Rivet. Then again, Good is very different from Rivet: Its young founders have money. Lots of it. But that means head honcho Ben Goldhirsh and his L.A. staff can afford to be a really charitable bunch. With the goal of 50,000 subscribers and $1 million donated by the middle of next year, they’ll give 100 percent of the subscription fee to an organization of your choice. Six issues, $20

Is that special someone a “hands-on” kind of guy or girl? Try slipping Craft or Make in their mailbox. They’re “sister” publications focusing on crafts (duh) and technology, respectively. Four issues, $34.95 (both magazines)

mental_floss is full of weird trivia and has a great name, if you can get past the uncomfortable image it brings to mind. They’re running a holiday gift subscription special: for $6 more than the usual price, you get an extra issue to stuff in someone’s stocking on the big day. Six issues, 21.97

Venus Zine covers women in music, film, art, fashion, and all things DIY—and there’s even a “Penus” section for the guys! Cover stars of the past year include Neko Case, Amy Sedaris and Anna Sui. They’re cool. And so is the girl you should give this subscription to. Four issues, $15

And of course, there’s always Rivet. An excellent choice, any time of year.
