Mid-80’s Melange: The SnowLeopards
Posted by Mishy Scharlock“How ‘bout this one?” Heather handed me a CD, as we browsed through stacks of jewel cases. “I haven’t heard of them.””The SnowLeopards?” I asked her, curiously. I turned the CD over to look at the song titles. “Hey, this track is called ‘I’m On Fire (DooDoo)’.”
“What does that mean?” she asked, giving me a look.
“Not sure,” I replied. “There’s only one way to find out.”
A bit later I discovered that the DooDoo stood for the catchy chorus to the song. It wasn’t long before I was singing along with Heidi Lee, the lead singer of The SnowLeopards. This band from Boston has some things going for them - great lead vocals and tunes that make you want to turn it up and dance along to their early-80s sound. Though their songs aren’t striving to do anything complex or completely musically new, much of the band’s charm lies in their twist on a familiar rock sound. (Some of their other charms? Lee sounds like Joan Jett and Mike Oor’s guitars make her sound all the more authentic.)
A young band, they’ve produced one album, Debut, and they’re steadily gaining recognition. In 2006, their song “Stuck in the Middle” won Best Local Song at the Boston Music Awards. This year, they’ve been featured on NPR’s Open Mic program, as well as been nominated for three different awards in the Boston Phoenix Best Music Poll. Going to be in Cambridge this summer? Check them out on August 3 – details on their website. They’ll definitely be worth your time.
