The Crawl Space Gallery has put out a call for submissions for a deliciously intriguing concept. The first annual Studio Intensive Residency is looking for a resident who will consent to a one-week lock-in (September 18-24). The artist has seven days and seven nights to prepare an exhibit to be installed the following week. Hot plate, refrigerator, toilet, sink, cot, and meals are provided.

Sounds a lot like Joseph Beuys’ 1974 work I Like America And America Likes Me, in which he shut himself into a gallery space with a coyote for three days, except that Beuys was performing art whereas this lucky resident will be creating an exhibit. Before you apply, ask youself this important question: can you really go seven days and seven nights without email access?

Submission Details:

     1.  On CD or DVD:
     - 10-20 digital images of recent work

     2.  Printed:
     - proposed use of time during residency lock-in
and how you hope to impact your work
     - artist resume and statement
     - work sample description

     3.  $10 application fee made payable to Crawl Space

POSTMARK DEADLINE 4 August 2007

[…] Remember when we posted about the Crawl Space’s call for submissions  for, basically, a lock-in? Well, winner Michelle Fried has spent the last week wondering, ”How do these characters, like DJ Tanner, Kurt Cobain, Marshall Applewhite (the charismatic leader from the Heaven’s Gate Cult), and Igrid-Bayer (Escambia High School’s Homecoming Queen) play into our biographies as adults?” […]
