RIP, Kitchen Sink

The world of independent publishing can be lonely. It seems like every time I turn around, another great magazine is folding for some reason or another.

For the last four years, though, I’ve been a big admirer of Kitchen Sink, a great general interest mag out of the Bay Area. I’ve often thought of Kitchen Sink as RIVET’s closest relative — in ethos, in mission, in scope, in size. So imagine my dismay when I popped over to their website last night to check in on their recent happenings — only to find that last July, Kitchen Sink shut down. Sad.

Here’s what they had to say — all of which resonates profoundly as the RIVET staff marches steadfast into a season of serious fundraising and our remarkable sixth anniversary.

“Thanks to every person who ever bought, borrowed, or stole a copy of Kitchen Sink; all the subscribers who waited patiently by the mailbox; every reader who ever wrote us a letter or recommended us to a friend or stranger; every writer, illustrator, designer and volunteer who donated their work to make our work what it was; all the bands and solo artists who played at our events; every bar, gallery, club, warehouse (or combination of the four) that hosted us; every donor (anonymous and otherwise) who subsidized our sales; each advertiser who wanted to be seen with us; all the readers at Telegraph Stories (past and future); each artist who donated items to our auctions; anyone who ever stuffed a KS subscriber envelope or worked the door at a fundraiser; our bookkeeper, accountant, mailbox lady, families, friends, lovers, and anybody else who doesn’t fall into one of these categories. We are proud of the work we’ve done here, and we love you in a way that—even thinking too much—we can’t express.”

Kudos to all of them for a job so very well done.
